The Sun, Moon, planets, and stars have accompanied sky watchers over millennia. The Pleiades star cluster, observable from every continent except Antarctica, is tied to Indigenous worldviews, astronomy, calendaring, traditional weaving, weather prediction, and agriculture. For the original peoples of Polynesia, Mesoamerica, and the Andes, the Pleiades cluster continues to be a source of knowledge, both culturally and scientifically. Due to native language loss and globalization, the knowledge is eroding at a fast pace. I will describe results of a Fulbright U.S. Global Scholar collaborative research project conducted in ancestral lands with Indigenous elders, young adults, and academics, as well as with other knowledge holders in Aotearoa/New Zealand, Guatemala, and Peru. Results are being shared locally for the benefit of the host communities and future generations.

Isabel Hawkins, Ph.D., is Astronomer & Senior Scientist at the Exploratorium museum of art, science, and human perception in San Francisco, CA. As a Fulbright US Global Scholar in Aotearoa/New Zealand, Guatemala, and Peru (2018-2022), she conducted cross-cultural research on traditional knowledge of the Pleiades star cluster in collaboration with Indigenous knowledge holders. She is a bilingual and bicultural science educator with a doctorate in astrophysics from UCLA. Her passion is to facilitate authentic participation of pluricultural communities, particularly Indigenous and Latinx, in STEM in ways that make visible and animate The Cultural Roots of STEM.  Her interests include latin dance and the study of Maya hieroglyphs and Indigenous languages.

Measuring gravitational waves is a revolutionary new way to do astronomy.  They were predicted by Einstein but we did not have the technology to find them in his lifetime. In 2015, LIGO (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) first detected one of these waves - a tiny ripple in space itself, generated by the collision of two black holes. Since then, LIGO and its international partners have measured nearly 100 signals. What can we learn from these bursts of energy from the mergers of black holes or the collision of two neutron stars? How is it possible to measure a wave which stretches our detector 1000 times less than the diameter of a proton? And what's coming next in our search for these tell-tale ripples in space?

Dr. Brian Lantz is a Senior Research Scientist at Stanford University. He started working on LIGO in 1991 as an undergraduate in Nobel Laureate Rai Weiss's lab at MIT and continued there for his PhD, building high-power interferometers that were prototypes for LIGO. Dr. Lantz is the scientific leader for the Advanced LIGO seismic isolation system, and he is designing new mirror suspensions to upgrade Advanced LIGO.  He loves to work on these amazing machines.

The Sun, our nearest star, is more than just a blazing ball of fire. Its atmosphere, hotter than its already scorching surface, presents a puzzle that has intrigued scientists for years. How does the Sun’s magnetic field drive the heating of its 10,000-degree chromosphere and million-degree corona? This enigma holds significant implications for Earth, as the Sun’s corona hosts powerful explosions and eruptions that can trigger space weather events affecting our technology-dependent society. From mesmerizing auroras to disruptions in communication systems and satellite operations, the Sun’s activity touches our daily lives in unexpected ways.

In this talk, I will delve into the recent strides made in understanding the Sun’s atmospheric dynamics. Thanks to breakthrough observations from space-based telescopes like NASA’s IRIS and SDO, coupled with advancements in supercomputing, we are gaining deeper insights into the mechanisms driving solar heating. Moreover, I will explore the upcoming frontier in solar research, with future observatories like MUSE poised to revolutionize our understanding of the Sun’s behavior and its impact on our planet and beyond.

New technologies can sometimes open the door for the creation of new types of art. The advancing imaging hardware and software technologies in the last decade have made possible the creation of art with astrophotography. Gary Lopez is one of the first to explore astrophotography as a fine art. In this presentation he will discuss the processes he has developed to create his images, including his adaptation of the classical elements of fine art photography. A collection of Gary’s images will be on display.
